I’ve been writing online (blogging) since 2008. I am sure I have enough authority to create the list of reasons that most people lose in this game.
I don’t want to beat around the bush. So I list’em just as bullet points here.
- Writing to make quick money.
- Writing for Instant rewards. Not willing to play the long game. Prioritizing fast growth rather than a strong foundation and exponential growth — at later times.
- Playing only by your terms. Naive, self-centric writers who are not willing to change their terms of engagement with the world. (You have to play according to the platform and readers' terms)
- Playing the metagame. Not focusing on the actual game (of writing).
- Always in the process of finding a better process rather than refining your process by writing continuously.
- Always looking at winners. Believing the grasses are greener at their side.
- Afraid of rejection — Not expecting rejections. Afraid of being disagreed with.
- Not allowing yourself to make mistakes. If you treat writing as walking on the glass, then you will never make a big progress.
