Is Meidum against authors who write in different niches?

What if you write on different niches in Medium?

Today I saw this new thing, an update, from Medium.

To counter clickbaity articles give a better user experience and give right fit articles to the right audience, Medium has enabled this feature.

Check the screenshot.

You have 3 options.

  1. You can choose to see fewer stories on the selected topic (or topics to which the story is currently tagged).
  2. You can report this story. (more like marking it as spam in email).
  3. Mute author.

The last option is the biggest threat to authors. Especially to authors who write on different topics.

Let's say, a reader starts to follow the author for his stories on niche “A”.

Later the author writes another story on niche “B”. This story will be pushed to the feed of the reader (who started to follow the author recently).

Let’s assume the reader doesn’t like the topic “B”, and then if he decides to choose the “mute author” option, what will happen?

The reader won’t receive any stories from the writer in the above case. Even if he writes on the niche “A” — the favorite topic of the reader.

In the case of writers who only write about one niche, this will be a good option. But in other cases, (like me) who write on different niches, it will cause you to lose followers. The followers will become dormant followers. Because they won’t receive your stories on their Medium’s home page.

This update is good. This will filter out writers who constantly pushing new stories without much value (annoying). That is whoever using quantity as a strategy to earn more through Medium.

But it also affects the writers who write under the topics of different niches. Even if they write quality content, there’s a high chance they will get muted.

This is like Meidum is giving you an ultimatum.

Either write on this niche or on that one. You can’t have both.

Write now I am focusing on writing a quality article on any niche and have to see how it plays in reality.

Stay tuned for my further findings about Medium distribution. (from my personal experience).
